I have upgraded my Samsung BlackJack for a BlackJack II. So far so good:
- I can now use MS Voice Command to lookup a phone number without waiting 10 seconds for it to search my contacts (I have about 2,000 contacts in my phone because I sync my sales contact database to the phone).
- The bluetooth stack has been improved. Now I can redirect podcasts and streaming radio via bluetooth to my Jawbone headset using a free application called BlueTooth Audio, or you can install my favorite media player, PocketPlayer (not free) which has built in support for redirecting to a BlueTooth headset.
- The connector for the cable is different that the BJ connector which means that I have to replace all of my cables, chargers and my wired headset. Very frustrating!
- I was upset that AT&T disabled Internet Connection Sharing, but a hack is now out that will enable Internet Connection Sharing. Now I can now connect my Laptop to the internet via USB or Bluetooth via my BJ2 at 300 - 500kbps. The instructions and files can be found on this post at Howard Forums, but I have cleaned up the instructions for you here (note that I am running WM 6, I have not tried this yet on WM 6.1):
- Download the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab file. (UPDATE: The link to the original appunlock.cab file was broken, so I have updated the link with a new file. I haven't tested this new file, so let me know if it works.)
- Download the secpolicies.cab file.
- Download the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab file (WARNING: If you download this file using IE, it may incorrectly name the extension .isc be sure to rename it to .cab before saving it.)
- Transfer all of these cab files to your BlackJack's \My Documents folder.
- Install the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab file and reboot.
- Install the secpolicies.cab and reboot.
- Install the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab and reboot.
- Navigate to \My Documents and click on Certs.cab to install and then reboot.
- You should now be able to run ICS from the Internet Sharing Icon in your Start Menu. (Make sure your Network Connection in Internet Sharing is set to MEdia Net.)

i did what u said on downloading the rt files to my blackjack 2 phone and when i connect my phone by usb and go to ISC file ill hit connect and it says it is connected but i cant go on the internet so i went to my network and sharing center on my compu and it says unidentified network limited connectivity
do you have any advice
i had the blackjack 1 and it worked fine but the bj 2 is not working

Ok.. how do you just "reboot" the phone without taking the battery out? I'd really like to get this working. :)

Hi Jay,
I tried to replicate your problem on my phone and I had the same issue. After a bit of research, I think the appunlock.cab file I referenced in my blog may not have been the correct file. I have updated my blog with (what I think) is the correct file. Try following the steps again. I will walk through it again this weekend and let you know if it works.
Once we get it all installed correctly, to start ICS over USB, plug in the USB cable to your BlackJack and to your computer. In ICS under PC Connection, select USB. Press left soft key (called connect) and your network connection should automatically connect to the Internet.
You can check your connection on your PC from Network Connections, the status of the new network connection should say "Connected."
Note that if you are connected to another network connection on your computer it will use that connection rather than your BlackJack, so disconnect from other networks before you connect your BlackJack.

Hi Alan,
There are two ways you can reboot your BlackJack II without having to pull out the battery:
1. Hold down the Power Button (on the top right of the BJ) until the power down cycle starts.
2. Tap the power button (on the top right of the BJ). This will bring up the Quick List. The first option is Power Off.
Once the power is off, hold the power button down until the phone turns back on. There you go, you've rebooted your BJ.
NOTE: I have updated my Blog instructions with a new appunlock.cab file, so you may need to follow my setup instructions again.

I have followed the above instructions. I start the Internet Sharing application and select USB for the PC Connection and MediaNet for the Network Connection and connect. I physically connect the Blackjack II to the PC via USB but do not get an internet connection. Have tried the same with a Bluetooth PAN connection which does not connect either. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I found out the device wouldn't sync either so I performed a hard reset on the BJII. After going back through the above steps all worked ok. Thanks for sharing this with us!!!

HAHAHAHA this worked perfect for me...I followed the instructions implicitly and I was rewarded with internet connection through my phone...thanks a bunch...I'm using Vista (installed windows devices elevated as admin)...connected through usb medianet for network!

I followed each instruction (they key is to switch internet connection to media net) and the ICS works perfectly. I just conducted a speed test at the speed easy site and returned with:
Down: 1293 kbps
Up: 300 kbps

Ok I have got it installed and the Icon is there and runs. I cant get it to connect. I see some have done a hard reset, I am a little scared to do that because I have my phone unlocked so I can use with T-mobile and I have Garmin Mobil XT installed from the person who unlocked it and dont want to loose anything... What can I do?

Is the Rambler still running? Do you still like the Cars? I'd love to catch up =0)

Thank you! worked first try ;)
I wanted to get the bluetooth audio you mentioned, but the link is dead, rather it says the company is no longer in biz... fyi.

Hi Jason,
You are right, the company did go out of business. I have updated the BlueTooth audio link to point to the actual file so you can download it directly from the link above. Enjoy!

I'm looking at getting the BJ2 and doing this ICS, however, I've heard stories that if you are doing an ICS without a tethering plan that AT&T will charge extra on your bill, any truth to this?

Just did this while driving down the road. Typing this on I-5. Worked great. Thanks for putting this together!

Thanks for this Jeff, reading that original 19 page thread is painful. I'm stuck on step 8. Somehow my BJII is hiding some files. When I browse My Documents, no cab files can be found, yet I can search for certs.cab, and Windows mobile finds the file; but the 'open' option from within the search results window is greyed. I can't install certs.cab, anyone have any ideas?

Update on my post above. I downloaded Total Commander and could browse to and launch certs.cab just fine. I'm writing this from my tethered BJII right now! Thanks again!

I just got my BJ II today and followed your post to enable Internet sharing. Unfortunately, I have not been successful.
The BJ II gives an error - The remote party has ended this connection. :-(
Would appreciate any help.

Update - After hard resetting, and following the steps you outlined got my Internet Sharing working.
Quick note - The PC no longer shows any icon for the network connectivity on the right bottom side of the screen (as it would for Ethernet or 802.11 connections).
However, the internet was reachable, and ipconfig on the C: prompt gave the correct IP address.

Tony,
If you are using ATT, change the Network Connection from AT&T IMS to MediaNet.

Hello, I've installed these as directed, when I clicked connect the first time, windows vista popped up installing device driver software, but then said it could not install it. It then connected with the phone as a network with local only.
I rebooted and tried again, no driver install, and network connects with Local only -- no internet. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Nevermind! I had installed the app unlock from the other site that included the mod for gps. I uninstalled all that, and reinstalled from your links and now SUCCESS!
Thanks

I downloaded the files from my phone and when t was downloading it said that it was going into /my documents. But when I went to the folder the files weren't there. So i couldn't follow the rest of the instructions.

Jeff,
First, thanks for making the steps so simple for the technologically uninclined. I still seem to be having troubles though. The first problem is that your appunlock link doesn't seem to function. I did find another unlock app, installed and then went through the rest of your steps no problem. After clicking on the ICS icon, the phone shows "connected" but, I still can't connect to internet. The other issue as that activesync is no longer functioning. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.
Thanks,
D

Hi Everyone,
I have updated the appunlock.cab broken link in my post to the the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab. I have not had the chance to test this yet, so please let me know if it works.
Thanks and happy mobile connection sharing!

I am using ATT, how to change the Network Connection from AT&T IMS to MediaNet?
Plus, when I connect with the USB it says connected, but local connection only, not internet :(

It worked perfectly on my BJ2 with WM6.1 on T-Mobile. Thank you.

This is awesome and works great! Exactly as advertised on 6.1. Thanks!

I am having the same issue as the posted below and wanted to see if anyone knew of a fix? Very odd as I am connected (using MediaNet) but the internet will not work on my laptop and it appears that my laptop is getting a local IP address only of 192.168.0.2.
Thanks.
